I've been to a few gyms in Stoke, some of which were good and some not so good. I'm quite confident that Horizon [now Totem] is the best fit for me by a mile

  • Kieran Breese

Really welcoming environment, Jon’s teaching is very helpful and it’s always a great workout. Would recommend anyone looking into BJJ to give it a go

  • Katie Hopewell

Can’t recommend this place enough. Been going for a few months now and it’s such a lovely place with great people. As a female I was abit nervous as first but everyone is so welcoming and supportive.

  • Harry Thorley

Great team and a fun environment to train in. Progression is quick and noticeable thanks to Jon’s commitment and teaching style, and I’ve honestly never had so much self-confidence since starting BJJ. Very affordable and highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still deciding? Here are the questions we hear most before a first class.

What should I bring?

You can bring your gi or no-gi attire if you have it, but otherwise you can come with tight-fitting top with shorts or bottoms, ideally without pockets and zips. It's also a good idea to bring some water. In addition, please ensure you're clean, have trimmed nails and are without jewellery (studs can be covered with tape).

What if I'm older or not physically fit?

At Totem, age and fitness level are never barriers to starting your grappling journey. Our classes are inclusive and cater to individuals of all ages, genders and fitness abilities. Grappling is known for its adaptability, allowing practitioners to learn at their own pace and gradually improve their physical condition.

What are the costs for classes?

Your first class is free! You can check out our membership page to see the latest options available and choose what's best for you.

How is grappling different from other martial arts?

Grappling is the modern version of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo and Submission wrestling. It integrates these different traditions alongside embracing modern sport science. We value learning and community over strict and fxed traditions.

Do I need to buy anything extra?

No. We allow our students to wear athletic clothes they already own. For regular practitioners, they will often purchase things such as a gumshield and also some specific no-gi or gi attire when they can.
